WATCH & LISTEN: Snarky Puppy – “Bent Nails” + More from GroundUP

Ground Up ( ART)
A band that I recently became aware of, Snarky Puppy, has a pretty new album and DVD titled GroundUP. It’s pretty unique in that it was recorded AND PERFORMED over three days in Matt Garrison’s Brooklyn space – Shapeshifter Lab – in front of an audience. The music in itself is a pretty unique quality and style of jazz-funk/pysch rock fusion. GroundUP follows their 2010 release, Tell Your Friends, which was also a live audio/video album. The new project’s visual component seems a little less produced or choreographed; overall it has a bit more of a true live concert feel than that of a music video. Below are SEVERAL selections from GroundUP (no need to watch in one sitting), starting with “Bent Nails”, which I either missed when I first checked out SP’s work, or was uploaded after the fact. The album and DVD are out on Philly-based Ropeadope Records and can be purchased here. If you live in or around NYC, you can see these BK residents perform live, IN-PERSON THIS SATURDAY SUNDAY (July 29th) on Long Island in Huntington.
