Early Hip Hop Shadyness and the Sugar Hill Gang

Here’s a good article on the somewhat controversial and illegitimate place the Sugar Hill Gang has in hip hop history. When many people think of early old school rap, they think of the Gang’s Rappers Delight – a song that arguably doesn’t really showcase the true quality of hip hop artists and music from that era. I was just discussing this subject with a friend, so this article is right on time for me. Reading it won’t change the fact that a lot of people who didn’t grow up on old school find it boring. A lot of it really is. But, how many people are partially basing their opinion of old hip hop on a song made by folks who weren’t for real and not taken seriously by the real emcees from that era?
